SureFlap Microchip Pet Door FAQs

Can my pet use the SureFlap Microchip Pet Door without a microchip?
We recommend you use the SureFlap Microchip Pet Door with your pet’s implanted microchip, this means they don’t need to wear a collar. However, all Sure Petcare products can be used with a SureFlap RFID Collar Tag that works in the same way, giving your pet a unique ID when using the product. A single collar tag is supplied with the SureFlap Microchip Pet Door. Always make sure to use a breakaway collar for cats, if microchipping isn’t an option.
How does the SureFlap Microchip Pet Door know it’s my pet?
The SureFlap Microchip Pet Door utilises a passive learning technique. When the learn mode is activated on the SureFlap Microchip Pet Door, it unlocks, and when your pet passes through the door the product scans the microchip and permanently stores its unique ID number in its memory. From that point forward, whenever your pet approaches the product, they will be recognised by it. See the product manual for more details.
Should I have more than one SureFlap Microchip Pet Door?
Cats like to patrol their territory in one direction so you often find that your cat will exit the SureFlap Microchip Pet Door out the back of your house and then meow at the front door wanting to be let back inside their home. Installing multiple pet doors in your home will allow your cat to explore their territory more freely. Multiple pet doors can also be a benefit in multi-pet homes where pets don’t get on and can reduce stress levels. View all our SureFlap pet doors here.
How long will the batteries last in the SureFlap Microchip Pet Door?
Typical battery life for the SureFlap Microchip Pet Door with recommended batteries is over 6 months, and in many cases can last up to 12 months with normal use. The product requires 4 x C Cell (LR14) batteries. The low battery LED warning will flash for several days/weeks before the batteries need to be changed. Battery life is reduced by not following regular cleaning and improper battery placement. We recommend you use good quality batteries to get the longest battery live, don’t use rechargeable batteries, and change batteries as soon as the low battery LED light shows.
Will replacing the batteries effect the microchip memory?
No, once a pet’s microchip number has been registered on the SureFlap Microchip Pet Door, it stays in the memory whenever you need to replace the batteries.
What size pet is the SureFlap Microchip Pet Door designed for?
The SureFlap Microchip Pet Door is a suitable choice for large cats and small dogs. However, if you have a smaller cat weighing under 5kg, it is advisable to consider the SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap instead. This alternative cat flap features a smaller tunnel providing a suitable fit for smaller cats, however the SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap does not include curfew settings.
