SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap FAQs

My cat isn’t microchipped, can it use the SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap?
We recommend you use the SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap in conjunction with your pet’s implanted microchip so that they don’t need to wear a collar. However, this product can also be used with a SureFlap RFID Collar Tag if your pet is not microchipped. Collar tags are not supplied with the electronic SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap but can be purchased separately. Always make sure to use a breakaway collar if microchipping isn’t an option.
How does the SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap know my pet’s microchip number?
All Sure Petcare products use a passive learning technique. When you select the learn mode on the SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap the door unlocks. The next time your pet goes through the door, the product reads their microchip, and its unique ID number is stored in the memory permanently. Your pet will now be recognised by the product whenever they next approach it. See the product manual for more details.
Should I have more than one SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap in my home?
Many people don’t think beyond having more than one electronic cat flap and have never considered that multiple cat flaps could benefit their cat’s wellbeing. Cats like to patrol their territory in one direction, that’s why you might find that your cat will happily exit the cat flap out the back of your house and then meow at the front door to be let back inside. Installing multiple SureFlap Microchip Cat Flaps will allow your cat to explore their territory more freely. Multiple microchip cat flaps can also be a benefit in multi-pet homes where cats don’t get on. Multiple entry and exit points can reduce stress levels as cats can avoid each other more easily if necessary.
How long will the batteries last?
The electronic SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap requires 4 x AA (LR6) batteries. Typical battery life with recommended batteries is over 6 months, and in many cases, up to 12 months with normal use. The LED on the product will flash red every 4-5 seconds when the batteries need changing. The LED will flash for several days/weeks before the batteries run down completely. Battery usage is reduced by not following proper cleaning and not inserting the batteries in the correct orientation. We recommend you use good quality, non-rechargeable batteries such as Energizer or Duracell to get the longest battery life.
Will my SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap “forget” my cat’s microchip number when the batteries are changed?
No, once a pet’s microchip number is stored it stays in the memory whether the batteries are in place or not.
What size cat is suitable for the SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap?
The SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap is suitable for cats of small to medium size. However, if you have a larger cat weighing over 5kg, it is recommended to consider the SureFlap Microchip Pet Door instead. This alternative option provides a wider and taller tunnel, offering more space to accommodate larger cats comfortably.
